People enjoy dressing up whether it's sexy lingerie, club wear, sexy hosiery or costumes for many reasons including, sexy role-playing costumes, masquerade parties, Mardi Gras-type celebrations or costumes parties that require guests to dress as one of the characters in a murder mystery that gets solved over dinner with family or friends, as well as and a multitude of other occasions for costume parties.
The most common use of costumes is probably for purposes of the occasion known as Halloween, which includes the American tradition of children to wear a costumes and go “trick or treating.” This activity dates back many years to All Souls’ Day in England, when poor people would beg for food and others would give them pastry-type edibles in exchange for their promise to pray for the dead relatives of the family offering the treats! These pastries were known as “soul cakes” and the Church of England encouraged “going a souling,” to replace the ancient practice of leaving food or drink for wandering spirits
Halloween has always been an end-of-summer celebration based on superstition, costumes, magic and mystery began as a festival for European and Celtic people who felt especially close to deceased friends and family at this end-of-summer time and beginning of winter. They believed the spirits of the deceased were friendly ghosts and they lit candles to help them find their way home, as well as leaving edibles on doorsteps or setting a place at the dinner table for the departed!
The tradition of wearing Costumes for Halloween began hundreds of years ago when many Celtic and European people were afraid of the dark and the worry of uncertain, frightening times that the shorter days of winter would bring. These ancient people believed that ghostly spirits returned to the earth and that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes and ventured outside after dark! They didn’t want to be recognized by ghosts, so they donned facial masks so the ghostly spirits would mistake them for fellow ghosts. They even went so far as to place food outside their door in an effort to keep the wandering ghosts from attempting to get inside their homes!
Today most Halloween ghosts are depicted as malevolent and scary and our Halloween Costumes and superstitions have also become more fearsome! We avoid bad luck by not crossing paths with black cats because people in the middle age believed that witches turned themselves into cats to avoid being identified as witches! The ancient Egyptians believed that triangles were sacred and this fact probably has something to do with our unwillingness to walk under a ladder, even though that’s not an especially safe thing to do anyway! People have many superstitions, especially in the fall during Halloween season, including the need to throw some over our shoulder if we spill salt, avoiding stepping on cracks and the belief that breaking a mirror will bring seven years of bad luck!
There were also many ancient Halloween traditions centered around bringing good luck by participation in rituals that focused on the future of the living instead of the pasts of the dead! These included ceremonies that would help a young woman identify her future husband and reassure her that (with luck) she would be married by the next Halloween. In Scotland women would give the name of each of her suitors to a pile of hazelnuts and then toss them into a fire -- the nut that burned to ashes rather than exploding or popping was the nut that bore the name of her future husband! Confusingly, this custom has also been reversed to mean that the nut that burned away symbolized a love that wouldn’t last! Matchmakers in 18th century Ireland would hide a ring in mashed potatoes hoping to bring true love to the lucky girl who found it! Another superstition suggested that, if a young girl ate a concoction of sugary hazelnuts, walnuts and nutmeg before retiring to bed on Halloween night, she would dream about her future husband during the night! Other superstitions involved women tossing apple peelings over their shoulders with the hope that they would land by forming themselves into the shape of the initials of their future husband, all you need is your imagination and our Halloween costumes! Still others tried to uncover their futures by watching egg yolks float in a bowl of water, being the first to successfully bob for apples or being the first to find a burr on a chestnut hunt, which meant you’d be the first to marry!
